Narrator: Good morning teachers and fellow commonwealthians. Class 3/2 has come up with a CDP skit reflecting on the current affairs in the economy sector. Our skit focuses more on the Economic defence and learn how companies, government and students respond to these situations. Please enjoy our show. Our NE messages are no one owes Singapore a living, we must ourselves defend Singapore and we have confidence in our future. Our school values is warmth.

Narrator: Singapore is a major trading port who earns a lot of revenue by exporting. With the recent recession in the US, see how the companies in Singapore respond.

Company:

Ms Lin: Singapore Export Company is suffering a loss because of the economic recession in the US. I’m sorry but I think that we have to retrench a few workers as the US no longer wants our exports.

*Ms Ng comes in*

Ms Lin: I’m sorry Ms Ng but you have been fired.

Ms Ng: Please boss. Don’t fire me. I’ve worked so hard for the company. How can you retrench me of all people!

Ms Lin: I am very sorry but this is something that had to be done to save the company from going under.

Ms Tan: You have made up your mind. I see. Then I will go.

Narrator: Meanwhile, the government went through meetings after meetings discussing about the recession and the impact it would have on us as Singaporeans. Let us listen to one of their meetings.

Mr Tharman: The discussion for the economic situation is now in session.

Mr Tan: I am worried about our economic stability. If our economy suffers, then there will be retrenchment and bad business. We will also be vulnerable to the other countries around us wishing to do us harm. We cannot let out guards down regarding this matter. Our economic defence is at stake!

Mr Goh: Yes, I agree. There is a possibility of mass retrenchment which will worsen the economy. We must ourselves defend Singapore’s economy. No one else is responsible for our economy’s security and well-being. We cannot wait for other countries to offer help to us. We must find a solution fast!

Mr Hu: Maybe we could……

Narrator: What are the results of these meetings? Well, we will soon find out. After a month.

Mr Tharman: No one owes Singapore a living. We must find out own way to survive and prosper, turning challenge into opportunities. Our plan is working well. We have concentrated to get more clients from China and India to make up for the loss of customers from the states. India and China have big growing economies that we can offer our services to. Now, we are not so affected by the US recession as we have new customers.

Narrator: Meanwhiile, in Singapore Export Company,

Ms Lin: We all have to work hard. Winning new clients is not easy but if we do it, we will recoup the loss of clients from the states! I promise I will hold back the pay cuts to deal with the recession for two months but you, the staff of Singapore Export Company, must work hard round the clock to win us these new clients.

*Two employees walk to the front*

Employee 1: Wow. While other companies are having pay cuts, we still get our normal pay. I am so inspired to work hard. Anyway, it is a good plan to save the company.

Employee 2: The boss is so kind. I will also work hard to win our company these clients!

*Walks back to the group*

*Pass the mike around*

Employee 3: I will work hard to ensure that this company and Singapore’s economy stay’s afloat!

Employee 4: Yes! Me too!

Employee 5: Me three.

All of the employees (Shout) We will all work hard to ensure that this company and Singapore’s economy stays afloat!

Ms Lin: I know that my employees all have family to feed hence, I did not give them a paycut. However, I also want them to work hard so that we can get out of this situation. I believe that all my employees will follow my example and show warmth and teamspirit amongst themselves.

Narrator: The plan succeeded. Now, our economy is not so affected by the US Recession. Two years later, in 2010, a 16 year old student is wondering about what Polytechnic course he will take.

R.K: I want to pursue a degree in automechanics. Even though the market sector is still recovering from the recession, I believe that Singapore has handled the situation well. I have confidence in my country’s future.

Narrator: This is the end of our show. We hope you have learnt more about the economic situation in the world, especially US and Singapore while learning more about our school values and NE messages. Thank you.
